Why, Lord, do you stand far off?

I couldn’t think of a better title for this post. So ask yourself, why is such a refrain in the Christian bible? I guess that one was not too difficult. No god = where are you?

I just read a blog (with closed comments of course) that had this to say:

The rich and the powerful may think that God is far away, that He is passive, and that perhaps, He does not exist. But God hears the cry of the oppressed. It is very easy to fall into the traps of today’s consumer world and become rich in spirit: every Christian must ask himself to what extent he is not responsible for the injustice and discrimination which we witness.

Yes indeed. To what extent are Christians responsible for the injustice and discrimination that we see in the world today? Anti-gay buillshit, anyone? DoM, AFA, and those that preach ID bullshit, pastors telling their flock (read sheep) who to vote for and the list goes on.

So what did this blogger offer up to support their thoughts?

Psalm 10[a]

Why, Lord, do you stand far off?
    Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

We’re off to a rousing start here.

In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
who are caught in the schemes he devises.
He boasts about the cravings of his heart;
he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.
In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
His ways are always prosperous;
your laws are rejected by[b] him;
he sneers at all his enemies.
He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.”
He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”

His mouth is full of lies and threats;
trouble and evil are under his tongue.
He lies in wait near the villages;
from ambush he murders the innocent.
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
    like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;
he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10 His victims are crushed, they collapse;
they fall under his strength.
11 He says to himself, “God will never notice;
he covers his face and never sees.”

Wait, doesn’t this sound like what happened in the big financial crisis that shook the world? The description fits, odd isn’t it?

So where were all the good Christians when the 99 occupied Wall Street and elsewhere? Did they stand with the oppressed or did they go check their bank accounts and reassure themselves that voting Republican will make that stash bigger?

Did they take food or provide shelter to the oppressed in Wall Street?

Do they comfort those struggling for equal rights – wait, can’t do that because they’re sinners and going to hell.  The Christian god’s love is only for those that love him. Bigotry goes all the way to the top.

12 Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God.
Do not forget the helpless.
13 Why does the wicked man revile God?
Why does he say to himself,
“He won’t call me to account”?
14 But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted;
you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;
you are the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked man;
call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
that would not otherwise be found out.

Whoa! We can’t stop them lard, please break their arms…. only for the ones that are not found out. We humans will take care of the ones which are found out… that way you can look completely invisible so that this verse will always seem to make sense to believers.

16 The Lord is King for ever and ever;
the nations will perish from his land.

No matter how you measure it, this one is a fail.

17 You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;
you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed,
so that mere earthly mortals
will never again strike terror.

Yeah, that happened. Does everybody remember where you were and what you were doing when this happened? That’s what I thought. We can’t remember it because it never happened. But I guess god was out there with the 99. He’s probably the one that stuffed the toilet paper (last roll) in the bowl – bastard. It’s not a name if it’s true. Sure, god said he did it but he didn’t make any child support payments and besides, read Genesis again, how can you be sure that Satan wasn’t the only supernatural being in the story? Was god and Satan ever in the same place at the same time? He’s a shape shifter, of course he could look like a god. So really, If Satan knocked Mary up and kept pretending to be god, well…. it explains quite a bit, don’t you think?

Stand And Deliver, Part 1 Of Too Many

Yesterday I wrote about the idea of ‘stand and deliver’ and how it might apply to those around us. It’s funny how our brains find patterns easily. Think about blue cars and they seem to be everywhere you go. Here is today’s edition of ‘Stand and Deliver’ – demonstrating ethical integrity:

I was not an Eagle Scout but I did the evangelical Christian copy-cat deal. I have some empathy with the pain and trepidation that some former Eagle Scouts are going through lately. Some of them are Standing and Delivering. They are Delivering their Eagle Scout Badges back to the BSA because not doing so means they support the bigotry and hatred of the BSA leadership. I applaud them.

It’s not quite the same thing, but Stand and Deliver in the context I used it means denying anything and everything but what is honorable no matter the consequences, or something close to that. The Vlogger HealthyAddict stuck her ethical integrity out there fore all to see too.

Have you done anything to Stand and Deliver lately? Can you share it with us?
