Talk The Talk
If you want to understand what someone is really saying, you have to talk with them, and keep talking with them no matter how difficult those new or different ideas might seem. It’s worth the effort
For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to listen.Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking. — Stephen Hawking
As thoroughly as I know this lesson, it sometimes has to be relearned. Even when the person you are talking with seems to be calling you names and blaming you for stuff you have no control over. It’s not easy. You don’t always have to agree, but you do need to listen so that you can understand what is being said…. and then keep on talking.
What would be the point of posting all that if there were not a thought behind it? I’ve been trying to do some of that listening lately. In case you’re interested here’s a link so you can too: Black Skeptics over at Free Thought Blogs
I don’t find conversations about white supremacy or privilege easy to digest, mostly because it does not feel like my life has been one of privilege. Western society is estimated to be about 9 meals away from anarchy. That means the difference between the 1% and the least able among us is about 50 bucks worth of Big Macs. That sort of sets a scale for you, so tell me, really, how much of a difference is there between you and the person on the other side of the conversation?
What are your thoughts?
