Thanks for commenting Ariel,

It was thought provoking for me. I am especially impressed how this was done without religion other than slightly religious tones of how the government was treated/acted - which not much time was given to.

The act of murder was used as a pivotal device in a morality tale. I think this takes the question of morality into a safely grounded area from which to speak about it. The conversation can be confusing when talking morality with regard to child rearing etc. Murder seems to be well bounded in our brains (individually) as to whether it is right or justifiable.

In one or two points very graphic violence and murder were seen as justifiable but even then the movies questions whether this is good when we see the motivation behind it.

Very thought provoking indeed. I can see this movie ending up in philosophy classes for discussion.

I have not seen the movie but it sounds really interesting and thought-provoking, from what you have written. Also makes me wonder what the natural inclinations of humans are, and if laws are the only things stopping people from doing bad things.

I don't think any kind of cruelty or violence is ever 'justified' in the moral sense, but maintaining order in society comes at a cost.

The problem with faith is that (in my opinion) it is linked to emotion, as opposed to logic. That's why many people turn to religion when they're at their most vulnerable. There is so much uncertainty in this world and many people need to know what's going on, why things happen and whether everything is going to be alright in the end. Whereas people who rely on science and logic are comfortable with this uncertainty and have the 'let's find out' attitude.

By the way, I'm not an ex-theist either. I went from 'I think maybe there's a God' to 'I'm quite sure there isn't a God' to 'I hope there isn't a God'.

WOW, that is effing awesome. I have to go research this Tse guy... you are explaining exactly what I think but in different perspective.... different view point of understanding.

In my view, setting those goals is about modelling the world and making all the pieces work together to get an outcome that we desire. We change various bits that feed into the model to alter the outcome (food, arrangements, decor etc) to get a good party result. We seem exactly on the same page...

WOW

Thanks for commenting. This is what I'm trying to say but explaining it mechanically so that it is understandable. The thoughts and actions are not random... we choose from thought and action patterns we know to alter the model so that we can predict the outcome. It is NOT reactive BS. We plan, plot, and connive to get an outcome that we desire. That is exactly what thought is... planning and modelling the world around us to achieve a goal which is self determined.
